A Recap of Sucess

We haven't posted since March, but that is only because we have good reason; we have been busy. So I'll try to get things back up to par, first, let’s sum of our two monthly meeting that we have had in the last two months. In the last meeting we have discussed some of the most pressing topics, TYR in the time to come. We are already planning to have TYR as an after-school program at AAECHS again this coming school year, so upcoming freshmen, you need to be ready. Also there are a few TYR performances approaching that I think you all should be notified about: “The Arts & Ideas Festival,” which is June 20th, 2009, and “The Fatherhood Weekend,” June 22nd, 2009. Both will be some of TYR’s most open performances ever but we’ll save the rest for another time. But enjoy what is to come, believe me, you will be surprised.

An Extended Outline

It is March and TYR’s to-do list has suddenly become longer. We stepped out of our annual board meeting this past Wednesday with much on our minds. The meeting began with evaluations of Amistad City, TYR’s high school program, and as usual, the program was running fine with our combination of Yale interns and TYR members. Then down to the more challinging stuff.
In discussing concerns of TYR not addressing some of the major issues and problems in the community such as the previous killing of a 17-year-old New Haven youth named Maurice Nicholson. This was very high concern by TYR board members and they pressed the preposal of the organization taking action. For a few moments we were on this topic and how came to the conclusion that the voice of TYR is to be heard in the community now more then later because of the seriousness of the issues that have occered in the neighborhood this early in 2009. ATTENTION NEW HAVEN: Do not be afraid of all youth that mobolize, we have mobalized for the greater good and wish to act against the crime of our city.
Finally ending our meeting, we discussed our future events. The only confirmed event to our meeting’s agenda was the Create-A-Comic Tournament that was going to take place at the library on March 14, 2009 at the main New Haven Free Public Library in downtown New Haven from 11AM to 5PM. It is a free program for grades 2 and up.
We predict a rough year for youth and the city in general. The econemy is falling, but TYR is standing. Not asking, but demanding, that we stand together as one not many. Evil, TYR won’t stand for any. And we will always stand for the right, Violence is not the answer but we will fight.

Time for 09

Sorry for the late greeting 2009, but just know we've been ready since 2008. The January and February of 2009 have been jam-packed with much fun for us TYR members. We have successfully started an after-school program at Amistad Academy Elm City High School (AAECHS) since late November of 2008 called Amistad City. In this program we've enrolled and have been training up to twenty members including veterans from Amistad Academy Middle School (AAMS). Operating an hour and a half after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, have fun enhancing their talents in the Arts, specifically: Poetry, Spoken Word, Music Performance (R&B, Rap, Pop, Hip-Hop, Rock, etc...) and much more. With help from AAECHS, Yale Student Raphael Magarik, and WORD, members love coming staying after school for the Amistad City program.
On a more serious note, we have a solid selection of member who have teamed up to make TYR the best it can possibly be. In February of 2009 at TYR's Annual Monthly Breakdown Meeting, (Mariah Ortiz), (Ibrahim AbdulQuaiyy), and 4ReAl met overlooking the past, present, and future of TYR. As young members of a youth organization, being only high school students, and living in a world changing due to a falling economy, these three could not just look at the world from a child's eyes, but through the pupils of educated professional's.
"They're taking money out of the youth, yet attempt plan for the future." 4ReAl states, "We need to anticipate a rough year." Arguments and statements went back and forth throughout the meeting about the job the city is doing to "improve" New Haven.
"We have reached a point in time where the only thing that could save us is ourselves. You call it human evolution, I say the youth revolution." (IBRAHIM)
"The city is just adding more problems for youth to deal with." (MARIAH)
We'll keep you posted on what is to come in our solution to this problem, but here is a question for you. Do you think that the government is doing a good job in taking care if New Haven.
